Welcome to my sports blog, written by me, Tim, a sports fanatic from Melbourne. Expect my sports opinions to be generally left-leaning, and sometimes even brutally honest (I was a media reporter for the ABC for a long time, which gives me some experience in responding to abuse). Please follow me on Twitter @TimothyBrammer and read my work at The Conversation as well. Any tips are welcome at timbrm [at] gmail [dot] com.In the week prior to Christmas, all of America was treated to the final Presidential debate, where it seemed that every Democrat, with the exception of Hillary Clinton, was in favour of legalising marijuana. That the vast majority of Democrats support a measure that would likely result in massive crime and violence in their own states is, quite frankly, surprising. And to do so while simultaneously calling Donald Trump an “a**hole” and “a disgusting human being” was in itself appalling.
Donald Trump was a man of the people, who could have soldiered on as one of the most hated people in America. But no, because this election is far more important than the plight of a few dozen dead Mexicans, he had to respond to the outrageous attacks levelled at him by the candidates who sought the top job. In doing so, he showed he is not a man to be trifled with, and was prepared to stand his ground. And he was certainly on the money when he spoke about Hillary Clinton’s record as secretary of state. As he pointed out, she had approved a transfer of more weapons to the rebels in Syria than any other secretary of state. Not only does that make her unfit to be president, it makes her unfit to be at State. And she’s still there.
What she’s been doing since the 1990s has been truly horrible. It has not been lost on the Russians that the US has been supporting anti-government rebels, and has been arming them to the teeth. It’s about ensuring a pro-Russian government in Syria. We know this is what she has been up to because she told the world so. I mean, really. She’s one of the worst foreign policy disasters in recent memory. And to get away with it, she had to lie, which is why this debate on the release of her emails was so important.Donald Trump knows how to deal with a dishonest opponent. As the New York Times noted on Monday, he has a knack for extracting as much information as he needs without appearing overly aggressive. While Hillary Clinton was desperate to come out ahead on all subjects, Trump did not allow her to get her voice back. He repeatedly asked her whether she was going to jail, whether she was going to be charged. At one point, he said that there was an “insurance policy” against her becoming president, as if there were an alternative. While many of Clinton’s supporters might say this is not appropriate in a presidential debate, the fact is Trump is not trying to win this election. He knows he can’t win it, and this is his strategy to minimise the damage. What many Clinton supporters haven’t realised is that the debate is not about what they have done, but about what Hillary Clinton has done, and is yet to do. No-one would vote for her in a million years if they knew all of the scandals she has had to endure. And no-one is going to vote for Trump, no matter what he does, because he is not fit to be president. Hillary Clinton needs to be sent to prison. Her record as secretary of state speaks for itself. It is beyond debate. And it is shameful. For a number of reasons, Donald Trump has become a serious threat to Hillary Clinton. His supporters are mostly people who
