The train was late by 6 minutes, and that's not just an error. This is a deliberate delay by the stationmaster to make some sort of point. But that point seems to be that the station master is a big spiv who doesn't care. In fact, I think I can see him smiling and nodding at the two cops, as if to say, "There, you see. I told you, you should keep them away from me!"And he's right, of course. The only way to protect him is to have cops standing guard outside his office, armed and ready to jump on any of us who tries to go anywhere without paying. And, to be fair, he is right about the trains being late all the time. It is the state's responsibility to ensure that the trains run. But the state is in its usual mood of moping around the railway station in the face of all the people waiting for trains. Why can't the state make sure that the trains run on time? And the fact that the trains always run on time when the state is nowhere to be seen, and then on time even when the state is watching you, must be some sort of cosmic joke. You know what else would be a good idea? Have a list of all the people who are standing in queues at railway stations in all the states. And then give them jobs and a room in the station so they can do nothing else. Then, they would all be happy. Instead, the state seems to think it has some sort of magical power over people. In some states, you need a permit to go to any railway station. You need a special pass to be allowed into any city. And even then you can't go without paying huge bribes. And it seems to me that if the state can't even ensure that trains run on time, how the hell can it possibly guarantee that everybody gets a passport? It's all to do with the state, that's for sure. If it can't make sure the trains run, how on earth can it be sure that people's papers are not faked? How can it protect people from people who are trying to come into India illegally? In the past, I always felt the need to explain that I wasn't being paid by the Gujarat government. And the reason is that the Gujarat government is paying me, and that's the point. As the prime minister of the state is so quick to point out, the state itself doesn't have any money, so where does it get the money to pay me? This is also an occasion to note that the state government has got a bigger population than the country itself. (Even my brother points that out every time he points out that the state is short of money. He is so right about that!)Anyway, it is true, and the best way to check it out is to stand in the railway station at Ahmedabad. And I stand here every day and see people waiting to get their permits and go to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. They all stand in queues. And then they are all told that they are not allowed to stand in queues. And I see policemen standing around in their khaki uniforms. And they tell the people who are in queues that they will be arrested if they don't get out of the queue. Then I see other people who have special passes and they go into the station to stand in queues, and they never have a single problem. And then there are people who do have a permit, but then they are still told that they can't stand in queues. And, finally, there are a few people who do have a permit, and they go in to queue, and they don't have to pay any bribes. This is the kind of nonsense we have in India today. I thought I was getting angry,
