Carrental darbhanga, pronounced as car runthal dhanga, is the principal suburb and district of the city of Pune in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is situated approximately north of Pune, from state capital Mumbai, and is the commercial center of Pune. The district has a population of 657,923 (as of 2011). Carrental is from Mumbai. The area is considered to be the central business district of Pune because of the concentration of office workers and the area's well-planned street grid. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is a municipal corporation that governs Carrental.History Independence On 27 January 1961, the city of Pune became the first municipal corporation to establish a women's police station, which marked the commencement of women's police force in India. Culture The Kumbharwada area of the district is said to be the birthplace of the Marathi language. Marathi is now spoken as a first language in Pune district.The name of Carrental derives from the Marathi carrancha (carrancha-kheda), meaning carriage shed. The name of the city of Pune derives from Purna, which is Sanskrit for well. The term "Carrental" is derived from the Marathi term. The railway town of Waghoba (modern-day Waghoba taluka), situated in the Pune district, has been an important center for cotton-processing and weaving. In the mid-17th century, cotton-processing began to decline, partly because the region became inundated in the Marathwada region. Waghoba, however, was still well known as a major center for cotton processing and weaving.Geography Carrental is located north-east of Pune. The area is primarily a suburban part of the city of Pune. It is situated on a low hill near a ridge to the east of the city. The elevation of the district, at the lowest point, is around 100 meters.There are two rivers, namely Panchgani river and Man river, flowing through the city of Pune. The Man river has a length of about and forms a major part of the city of Pune. The Panchgani river joins Man river near to the center of the city. The climate of the city is of the humid subtropical type.Demographics According to the 2011 census, Carrental had a population of 657,923. Males constituted 52% of the population and females 48%. Carrental had an average literacy rate of 83%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy was 87%, and female literacy was 80%. In Carrental, 12% of the population was under 6 years of age.Educational institutions Carrental houses some of the largest educational institutions of Pune. These include: The first institute in Pune for higher learning, namely the University of Pune. The first institute in Pune for education in arts and humanities, namely the Marathi Academy of Music and Fine Arts (formerly the National Academy of Music and Fine Arts). The first institute for higher education in pharmacy and bio-technology, namely the R. R. Birla Institute of Scientific Research. The Pune University and College of Pharmacy is situated at Pune, just a few kilometers from Carrental.Nalanda Institute of Technology (formerly known as the Nalanda Institute of Technology and Management and NITM) is located just south of Carrental, and run by the Nalanda Education Society, a society of the Nalanda Trust, with the purpose of developing professional skills and technical education in Pune and North India.
